The history of the Saginaw Gears, a famed Michigan team, ended in Ohio with two teams that never took the ice; the Arctic Xpress and Canton Ice Patrol. The Gears were a long time IHL team in the 70s and a completely separate version of the Gears came to fruition in the CoHL/UHL in the 90s. After rebranding from the Saginaw Lumber Kings (and before that the Saginaw Wheels), the Gears was an attempted to try and grab the community’s interest with a retro name change. Unfortunately the team played an under whelming 98-99 season and skipped town middle of the next season in Dec ’99 for Massilion, Ohio just outside Canton.

That move was even worse. The team wasn’t good and the crowds were even worse. They won five of their final 55 games and went on hiatus after that. There was talk of building a big time rink in Massilion and the team rebranded twice more trying to get a team going. The two re-brands were the the Canton Ice Patrol and the Arctic Xpress. Neither team ever took the ice and are a unique and short piece of Ohio hockey history.
