The Dayton Gems were a long-running and very successful IHL team in the southwest Ohio city of Dayton. As a part of the IHL, the Gems played from 1964-77 and were briefly resurrected for the 1979-80 season. The Gems were always one of the best IHL teams on the ice. In their 14 seasons, they won three league titles, had five finals appearances, and only missed the playoffs in their first and last seasons on the ice. The Gems also had one of the better fanbases in the league, as for many years they attracted more than 5,000 fans per game. But by the late 1970s, the Gems were not able to survive as the hockey landscape changed considerably through vast major league expansion and difficult economic times. In the 2000s, the Gems moniker was brought back for a few years as IHL, and then UHL, teams used the name.
This would make a unique gift for the Ohioan in your life or a neat find for yourself of a vintage hockey team from Ohio.
