The New Haven Nutmegs were a one-year wonder in the EHL for the 1952-53 season. The New Haven Tomahawks, which entered the EHL in 1951-52 rebranded and changed their name to the Nutmegs for their second season. The Tomahawks won 37 of 66 games and made it to the EHL Finals in their lone season in the league, losing to the Johnstown Jets in 5 games. The Nutmegs wouldn’t do quite as well, winning only 28 and exiting the playoffs in the first round.
The Nutmegs did have one famous name on the roster, former Ranger and future Hall of Famer Ehrhardt “Ott” Heller skated in 21 games for the team. Heller played 15 seasons on Broadway during the 1930s and 40s as a defender, amassing 231 points in 647 games. After leaving the Rangers at age 36, he would play another 10 years in various minor leagues as a player-coach, including for the New Haven Ramblers, Indianapolis Capitals, Cleveland Barons, and of course the Nutmegs.
This would make a unique gift for thehockey fanin your life or a neat find for yourself of a vintage hockey team from Connecticut.
